“Right, so tell me again and this time, try to be a little more concise.”
“Well, officer…”
“It’s Wong, Daley Wong. Look, relax, handsome. I’m not here to bust you, okay? There’s no way you caused all this damage so you’ve got nothing to worry about. I just need to know what happened and what you told us before doesn’t make any sense. Try again?”
“I can try, Officer Wong.”
“Please, just Daley, bright eyes.”
“Umm… right. You wouldn’t happen to know a Captain Harkness, would you?”
“Can’t say as I do. Is he in the AD Police?”
“Probably as many of them as he could pin down, quite honestly. But right, neither here nor there, moving on to what you wanted to know.”
“That would be fabulous. Then, if you don’t mind, you can tell me the name of your tailor. I just love that coat. Tan is really your color.”
“Thank you, I suppose. About the damage?”
“Right, right. Business first.”
“So as I was telling the nice officer that just left on his motorcycle, I had just popped in for a drink. I’m from way, way out of town and it was a long trip. I came in, got to the bar and ordered something that sounded exotic. I think it was called a Sonoda Sunrise?”
“Oh, honey, two of those and a skinny thing like you wouldn’t be vertical.”
“Well, never really got the chance to find out, ay? I was waiting on the first one when one of the waitresses started complaining to the bartender about her cell phone reception. ‘Interference’,’ she said, every time she went near the back of the bar. Well, I can do some neat things with cellular phone so I asked if I could see hers for a minute.”
“And she just handed it over?”
“Well, I can be pretty charming when I want to be.”
“Mmm, isn’t that the truth? Go on.”
“So I took her phone, popped open the back and started to fiddle with it. Nothing serious, just a phased meson array set up using the lithium ions in the battery as a capacitance matrix. Easy stuff, sure, but more than enough to block out tachyon pulses.”
“Right. Of course. Whatever you say. So… what happened next?”
“Well that’s when all blazes cut loose. I turned that little cell phone into a tachyon negator and this older man in the back booth went completely berserk. One minute he was this refined looking bloke, definite business type, talking to this little computer with the word GENOM on it and the next…”
“Are you trying to say that one old man tore this building apart, caused this huge fire and endangered all these lives? Really?”
“I know, right? Bit daft, an old geezer doing all this but that’s because he wasn’t a businessman at all. He wasn’t even human. See, he got up and just started going crazy, grabbing things and slamming against the walls. When he did, he tore himself pretty good. Only instead of blood, he was…”
“He was metal underneath?”
“Right! He was a robot disguised to look like this older executive type but the second he got separated from whatever tachyon feed was keeping him online? Schizo-time.”
“So you fixing that waitresses’ cell phone caused the man…”
“…robot…”
“Right, it caused the robot to go nuts and cause all this damage?”
“Hrmm. Well… I mean… yeah, you could look at it like that. But the way I see it…”
“I’m sure you didn’t mean any harm, handsome, but I’ll have to ask you come down to headquarters for a full statement anyway, okay? Totally routine but I have to insist.”
“Okay, fair enough. I can’t blame you for doing your duty. You’ll probably need my identification and all that, right?”
“Absolutely.”
“Well my travel papers are right inside there. I’ll pop in and grab them, okay. Just take a sec and then we can head to clear all this up, Daley. All right?”
“Sure thing. I mean it’s not like you can climb into that big blue box and vanish, right?”
“Right?”
“Hello?”
